Mellieha is a typical destination for many rambling afficionados. It provides breathtaking views on all sides of the promontory due to its commanding position and altitude. I will describe the Selmun / Mistra Walk, as well as my Manikata/ Xaghra l-Hamra Trek separately. Beyond the village and towards the Island's 'fishtail', on the Marfa-Ridge, lies some beautiful steppe in different states of wildness. It can be considered stark and bleak, yet it is rugged and essentially wild and rich in fauna and flora, and is home to one of the worlds very few remaining Youkan Shearwater.... nesting on the North facing cliffs at Rdum il-Madonna. This is a protected species and is being studied by many nature bodies. Discover a beautiful inland sea at Id-Dragunara, and enjoy breathtaking views as you rise towards Ras il-Qammiegh, all featured in the Marfa-Ridge Walk described below. Manikata / Xaghra l-Hamra Trek _____________________________________________________________ The Marfa-Ridge Walk Best attempted by driving up to the Torri l-Ahmar and parking somewhere close to it. This is a circuit walk, taking you an entire 11km walk requiring approx 5 hours. This is best tackled in stages, so that it will be easy to follow. You will start off from this point, leaving the car park, start walking down the road below the tower towards Mellieha Bay until you reach the bottom of the ramp abutting on a busy cross road. You will have to cross the road carefully here, to continue your walk towards Armier. |
